The Bulletin Board for November 7th, 2016

What a glorious start to the school year these past two months.

The classrooms are buzzing with excitement as teachers and students dig deep into their explorations.  We’re immersed in place-based learning, highlighted by the 6/7/8’s (1st and 2nd grade) weekly Friday hikes on Mount Equinox.  Our classroom walls are evolving from their blank canvasses on the first day of school to a dazzling assortment of art, words, and found objects.  If you haven’t visited your child’s classroom recently, I highly encourage you to do so!

Help others learn about The Downtown School. Please spread the word about our upcoming Admissions Information Evenings.

  • The Pre-K and Kindergarten Information Evening is Tuesday, November 15th from 5:15pm-6:15pm.
  • The 1st-through-4th Grade Information Evening is Thursday, November 17th from 5:15pm-6:15pm.

At both information evenings, parents can learn about The Downtown School’s progressive approach to teaching and learning, meet teachers and current parents, and find out how and when to apply for the 2017-2018 school year. PLEASE join us for these events and share your TDS experience with prospective parents.  Help us grow and bring an amazing Downtown School education to more and more families!

Also coming up soon, we have been invited by Orvis, via TDS parent Kristin Comeau (Emma, 5/6’s), to participate in the Orvis Holiday Gift Wrapping program to raise money for our school.  Downtown School parents and staff will be wrapping gifts at Orvis on:

  • Saturday, November 26th and Sunday, December 11th
  • Both days from 11:00am to 4:00pm.

We wrap, and customers make a donation which goes to The Downtown School.  We’ll need parent volunteers on both these days in two hour shifts.

For those of you who like to plan way in advance, The Downtown School will have a Dollar Skate at Riley Rink on Sunday, February 5th from 1pm-3pm.  Last Year’s Dollar Skate was a super fun afternoon and raised close to $500 for The Downtown School.  Please plan to attend and spread the word.

Looking back on October…

Grandparents Day was a wonderful opportunity to welcome new faces (and some familiar ones) to our Downtown School Community.  Thank you to all who shared this day with us, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

Also in October, The Downtown School hosted three block-building workshops with nationally-recognized early-childhood educator, Betsy Grob.  40 early-childhood educators from programs all over our region took part in these workshops, and came away with a unique understanding of the critical role blocks can play in the social, emotional, and “academic” development of young children.  We thank Betsy and the BRSU for helping us bring these workshops to the teaching community.

That’s the news for now.  See below for some fun photos of the children and some information about ways to help The Downtown School. Have a wonderful week!
